The Apache of Jicarilla Nation is located in the mountains and rugged mesas of northern New Mexico. The landscape offers a diverse scenery of Ponderosa pine forests in mountainous terrain and Pinion pine mesas with Sage brush flats. The Jicarillas’ vigor and enthusiasm for life, combined with their deep knowledge and love of the land, is helping them achieve new levels of self- reliance and well-being as they become important participants in the economic growth of northern New Mexico and the American Southwest. The name “Jicarilla” means little basket and denotes an art form that made the basket makers unique. Other handicraft mastered by some tribal members are bead work, leather work, painting, and pottery. To see some of this art visit the Arts and Craft Museum in Dulce. |
